Helping an older parent in Schaumburg? Here’s the senior center, township services, transit and Medicare help, each with the official number and a link to the source. Call ahead to confirm hours.
Two places to start in Schaumburg: the park district and the township.
Schaumburg splits senior help between two organizations that don't advertise each other. Knowing which one does what saves a lot of phone calls.
The Schaumburg Park District Senior Center is the social side. It's in the Community Recreation Center at 505 N. Springinsguth Road, and the number is 847-490-7026. Most programs are for ages 50 and over, with fitness classes at 55 and over. It runs table tennis, bocce, billiards, pickleball, card games such as canasta, pinochle, and bridge, bingo, movie matinees, walking clubs, and technology help. It also runs senior softball and a seniors golf league. For a parent who is healthy but starting to stay in, this is the easiest introduction.
Schaumburg Township is the benefits side. Its Older Adult Services are for township residents 55 and over and are based at 1 Illinois Boulevard in Hoffman Estates. Services include benefits counseling for Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP, help with senior health insurance, legal help with wills and powers of attorney, free or discounted transit programs, home weatherization and utility assistance, door-to-door transportation, and food pantry access. It also runs dementia and Alzheimer's support groups and health screenings, including memory screenings.
Township services follow township boundaries, not village lines, so an address in Schaumburg is not automatically covered. Call the township's Disability & Senior Services line at 847-285-4541 (main line 847-884-0030, open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and give them the address before you count on a service.
If your parent needs help with legal documents, our Power of Attorney guide explains what the forms do before you meet a lawyer.
